11 Reasons why Ahmadis are Not Muslim

Ahmadi religion differs from the core tenets of Islam in fundamental ways. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad deviated from fundamental Islamic beliefs in ways that no Muslim can view as part of Islam.

Highlights

  • Ahmadi or Qadiani religion differs from Islam in its fundamental core tenets.
  • Ahmadi religion declares Mirza Ghulam Ahmad to be a prophet, whereas Muslims believe that there can be no new prophet of any type after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
  • Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed to be a reincarnation (نعوذ بالله) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
  • Mirza Ghulam Ahmad has insulted respectable prophets and the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ in his writings.

The Qadiani or Ahmadi religion is distinct and different from Islam. Many people do not comprehend why this distinction exists, and ask, why are Qadianis not Muslim? The short answer to this question is simply: Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s religion is blasphemous to Islam, and there are hundreds of instances in his writings of sacrilegious content, each of which is sufficient to expunge him from the fold of Islam.

Here, using references from Mirza’s own writings, we present eleven fundamental reasons why Ahmadi or Qadiani religion is inherently different from Islam, and where Mirza Ghulam Ahmad has flouted the core tenets of Islam.

1. Denial of Oneness of Allah

Tauheed, Monotheism or Oneness of Allah ﷻ, is the most important belief of Islam. A Muslim, by definition, is one who believes in Tauheed, and even the slightest inkling of shirk, or associating anyone with Allah ﷻ, expunges one from Islam. After all, this is why Christians are not considered Muslims, and this is the primary reason the Prophet ﷺ fought against the pagans in Makkah.

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, however, believes:

I saw in my dream that I am God myself and I became certain of it that indeed I am Him.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 5, p. 564

In a long narration of a kashf, or divine inspiration, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad writes,

I saw in my kashf that I am God myself and I became certain of it… In this instant, I saw that the soul of Allah encased upon me and absorbed me, possessing my body until there not a single atom of me remained and I saw my body that my organs became His organs and my eye had become His eye and my ears had become His ears and my tongue had become His tongue… godhood ascended upon me very strongly and I was pulled towards it from my head to toe… godhood was infused in my muscles and veins… And at that instance, I believed that my organs are not mine but of Allah…

Roohani Khazain, vol. 13, pp. 103 – 105

أنت منّي بمنزلتي و تفريدي

You are from Me, just like My Oneness and My Aloneness.

Roohani Khazain vol. 22, p. 89

I received divine revelation and Allah said to me, أنت منّي بمنزلتي اولادي, you are for Me like My children.

Tazkira, 4th Ed., p. 345

أنت منّي بمنزلتي ولدي
You are for Me just like My son.

Tazkira p. 422 4th printing

To associate another being with Allah ﷻ is shirk to begin with, but as a mere human, claiming to become a part of Allah ﷻ and using it to spout sacrilegious nonsense and passing it as the order of Allah ﷻ Himself is the highest order of blasphemy.

Mirza Qadiani has also written sacrilegious and disrespectful content about Allah ﷻ. For example, he writes:

Can any sane person accept that, in current times, God listens but does not speak? Then there will be the question, why does He not speak? Is His tongue afflicted with some disease?

Roohani Khazain, vol. 21, p. 312

2. Claim of Prophethood

It is also a salient belief of the Muslims, one that is necessary to be a part of the ummah, that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the last prophet sent to guide mankind until the Day of Judgement. Prophethood has ended with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. To claim prophethood after him is explicit disbelief and deviation from the Islamic creed.

It is stated in Sharah of Al Fiqh Al Akbar, an early text on Islamic creed by Imam Abu Hanifaؒ, that:

Claiming prophethood after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is kufr and the entire ummah has unanimity on it.

Sharah Al-Fiqh Al-Akbar, p. 202

Yet, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad says,

I swear by the God in whose Hand is my soul, that He is the One who sent me, and He named me Nabi (prophet), and He called me by the name of the Promised Messiah.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 22, p. 503

God is He who sent His messenger, that is, this humble man, with guidance and true religion and with virtuous etiquettes.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 17, p. 426

True God is He who sent His messenger in Qadian.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 18, p. 231

These are but a few instances of Mirza Qadiani’s explicit claims of prophethood. There is the consensus of the ummah that anyone claiming prophethood after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his followers is outside the fold of Islam.

3. Claim of being the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s claim of prophethood is not just of an ordinary prophet. Contrary to Islamic creed, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad concocted the belief that there would be the second coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He claimed that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came the first time in Makkah as Muhammad Bin Abdullah, and then a second time projectively (in baroozi form) as Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Bin Ghulam Murtaza. That is, Muhammad’s ﷺ spirituality, along with all the attributes of prophethood, became manifest again. Here are some references to his sacrilegious beliefs:

The Prophet ﷺ has two incarnations, or in different words, we can say that the return of the Prophet ﷺ to the world projectively was promised, and this promise has been fulfilled by the coming of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi.

Roohani Khazain vol. 17, p. 249

Mirza Qadiani professes this repulsive belief further as follows:

And Allah bestowed upon me the grace of the Prophet, and perfected it, and pulled the Prophet’s kindness and generosity towards me, till my being became his being. Thus, he who joins my Jama’at actually becomes one of the Sahabah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ… The person who differentiates between me and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is one who has neither seen nor recognized me.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 16, p. 258

This belief has been further clarified by Mirza Qadiani’s son, Mirza Bashir Ahmad, that

Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ to Qadian, to fulfill the promise stated in the verse وَ اٰخَرِیْنَ مِنْھُمْ لَمَّا یَلْحَقُوْا بِھِمْ.

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 105

The verse mentioned here, Quran 62:3, “And (this Messenger is sent also) to others from them who did not join them so far”, is universally understood by Islamic scholars to mean all those Muslims who came after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Qadianis came up with a novel interpretation to force a new meaning on this verse, which has no support whatsoever from the Quran, the Hadith, the understanding of the Companions and Islamic scholars throughout history.

Mirza Bashir Ahmad further writes:

And he who does not perceive the apostleship of the Promised Messiah as a second coming of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has disregarded the Quran, for the Quran is emphasizing again and again that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will return once again to this world.

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 105.

Of course, no such belief is endorsed by the Quran in any way. It is only Mirza Ghulam Ahmed and his followers who make this baseless assertion.

4. Distortion of the Meaning of the Kalima, the Declaration of Muslim Faith

The Kalima Tayyibah, لا اله الا الله محمد الرسول الله, is the basic declaration of faith in Islam. One who affirms it enters the fold of Islam. Yet, the Qadianis have distorted the meaning of this very kalima, interpreting it differently from what the Muslims have believed in ever since the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Mirza Bashir Ahmad was asked why they do not have a new kalimah when they have a new prophet? He responded:

After the advent of the Promised Messiah, the connotation of the name Muhammad in the kalimah has expanded to include one more prophet [i.e. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad].”

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 158

He further writes:

This is because the Promised Messiah and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are not two separate beings, as Mirza Sahib has himself said صَارَ وُجُوْدِیْ وُجُوْدَہٗ [my self has become the self of Muhammad ﷺ] and مَنْ فَرَّقَ بَیْنِی وَ بَیْنَ الْمُصْطَفٰی فَمَا عَرَفْنِی وَ مَا رَیٰ [One who considers me distinct from Muhammad ﷺ has neither seen me nor understood me] and this is because Allah had promised that he will depute Prophet Muhmmad ﷺ once again, as is evident from the verse وَاٰخَرِیْنَ مِنْھُمْ . Thus, the Promised Messiah himself is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who has returned once again for the propagation of Islam. This is why we do not need a new kalimah. Indeed, if someone other than the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had come, then that would have necessitated a new kalimah.”

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 158

Here Mirza Bashir has made it clear that when Ahmadis recite this Kalima, they interpret the name “Muhammad” to include Mirza Qadiani. Hence their Kalima interpretation is completely different from that of Muslims, and reciting this Kalima does not make them a Muslim.

In fact, unlike all earlier prophets who each had their own kalimah, Mirza Qadiani “steals” the Muslim kalimah, something that more than a billion Muslims were already reciting, to claim that it actually refers to him!

5. Insult of the Prophetsؑ

Muslims are obligated to believe, respect, and honor all of the prophetsؑ who came before the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The slightest disrespect to a prophet of Allah will be considered disbelief. From his writings, it is apparent that Mirza Qadiani does not revere Prophetsؑ as they are revered by Muslims. You can judge for yourself from the following quotes:

Every prophet has been reincarnated by my advent, and every messenger is concealed in my shirt.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 18, p. 290

Satanic words sometimes also find their way in the revelation of the prophets and the messengers.”

Roohani Khazain, vol. 3, p. 439

The havoc that drinking has wrecked on the people of Europe is due to the fact that Prophet Isa used to drink alcohol.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 11, p. 291

Isa’s three grandmothers were adulteresses and prostitutes.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 11, p. 291

To believe that the prophetsؑ were anything less than pure and sinless and that they did not fulfill their duty that Allah ﷻ sent them for is highly sinful and against Islamic belief.

6. Denial of Prophet Isa’sؑ Birth without a Father and the Chastity of Mariamؑ

Prophet Isa’sؑ birth without a father was a miracle of Allah ﷻ, explicitly established in the Quran. Mirza Qadiani not only denies Project Isa’sؑ birth without a father but seems to ridicule his virgin birth and rebuff the chastity of his mother, Mariamؑ, in direct contradiction to the Quran, which takes a person outside the fold of Islam.

Mariam’s ways were such that for some time, she restrained herself from marriage, but then, at the insistence of elders and due to her pregnancy, she relented.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 19, p. 18

Isa had four brothers and two sisters, and they were all real siblings of Isa, that is, they were offspring of Yousuf and Mariam.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 19, p. 18

To accuse and speak so disrespectfully of holy figures, including a Prophetؑ, who has been honored by the Quran and in Islam so highly, is unforgivable.

7. Insult of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ

Given Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s sacrilegious writings regarding Allah ﷻ, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and other prophetsؑ, the insult he heaps on the Companions of the Prophetؓ is actually not surprising. Judge for yourself whether the author of these statements can be a Muslim?

Some foolish Companions had no inkling of wisdom

Roohani Khazain vol. 21 p 285

Abu Hurairah was stupid, and did not narrate well.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 19, p. 127

Forget about the disagreement of the old caliphate, embrace the new caliphate now. You now have a living Ali amongst you, and you shun him and seek a dead Ali?

Malfoodhat, vol. 1, p. 400

Sayyidna Fatima in a state of divine inspiration put my head on her thigh and showed me that I am one of them.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 18, p. 217

You have forgotten the Majesty and Splendor of Allah, and your litany is limited to Hussain. Do you disbelieve? This is a tragedy for Islam that next to the fragrance of musk is a pile of dung [i.e. the commemoration of Hussain]

Roohani Khazain, vol. 18, p. 477

The followers of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed have taken to following his lead and disrespecting the Prophet ﷺ, his family and his companionsؓ by referring to Mirza Ghulam Ahmed’s family using Islamic terms reserved by Muslims only to revere and respect the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ family and his companionsؓ.

8. Contempt of the Quran

It was not enough for Mirza Ghulam Ahmed to disregard the Quran and misinterpret it completely. He also created his own sayings and claimed they were a part of the Holy Book. He says:

Quran is the Book of God and the utterances from my mouth.

Tazkirah, p. 77, 4th printing

I swear by God that I believe in these divine inspirations just as I believe in the Quran and other Divine Scriptures. Just as I believe the Quran to be the conclusive and certain Word of God, in the same manner, I also believe what is revealed upon me to be the Word of God.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 22, p. 220

Mirza Bashir Ahmad, his son, further clarifies the Qadiani creed regarding the Quran:

We maintain that the Quran does not exist anymore. If it had existed, why would there be a need for another prophet? The problem is that the Quran had been retracted from the world. This is why it was necessary for the Prophet Muhammad to return again in buroozi form [as Mirza Sahib] so that the Quran can be revealed once again.”

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 173

Considering Allah ﷻ has revealed that the Quran has been completely revealed to the Muslim Ummah through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Mirza Ghulam attempting to pass his own utterances as part of it while denying true utterances is profane. These statements demonstrate a complete deviation from Islam.

9. Contempt of the Hadith

Mirza Ghulam has no respect for the Hadith just as he has no respect for the Holy Quran. He disrespects the Hadith that does not follow his distorted beliefs by calling them “garbage”, as in his referenced words:

The hadith is not the basis of this claim of mine [i.e. the claim of being Messiah], but rather, the basis is the Quran and the divine revelation that was sent down upon me. Indeed, we support those hadiths which are in accordance with the Holy Quran and do not contradict any of my own revelations. The rest, we throw away like garbage.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 19, p. 140

And one who has been sent as the arbitrator [i.e. myself] has the right to accept from the collection of hadiths whatever he wants after receiving knowledge from God, and to discard any heap that he wants after receiving knowledge from God.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 17, p. 401

These statements of Mirza Qadiani have been further clarified in their organization’s newspaper, Al Fadl:

Both the Quran and the revelations received by the Promised Messiah are the Word of God. There is no possibility of a discrepancy between them. Therefore, there is no question of giving the Quran a higher status (i.e. both are equal in stature). And the statements that we have heard from the Promised Messiah are more authentic than the hadith, for we have not heard the hadith directly from the lips of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.”

Al Fadl Newspaper, Vol. 2, No. 133, p. 6, 30 April 1915.

The fact that anyone has the audacity to disrespect both the Quran and Hadith this way, yet call himself and his followers Muslims, is laughable.

10. Denial of Obligation of Jihad

Hundreds of references in the Quran and the Hadith testify that Jihad is an important tenet of Islam, and according to hadith, it will continue till the Day of Judgment. The stance of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed on Jihad very clearly reveals his true alliances. He claims that Jihad is ‘unlawful’ and ‘haraam’ in modern times which stems from his avid support of the British government.

Anyone who swears allegiance to me and considers me the Promised Messiah must from the very same day adhere to the belief that in the current times, Jihad is absolutely haraam (unlawful and prohibited).

Majmoo-ae-Ishtiharaat, vol. 3, p. 21

It is indeed commendable to assist the British Government and to remove the very thought of the evil matter of Jihad from the hearts.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 19, p. 144

A significant portion of my life has been spent supporting and backing the British Empire, and I have written so much about the prohibition of Jihad and loyalty to the British Government that if all those books and pamphlets are collected in one place, they can fill 50 bookcases. I have propagated these books to the Arab world, Egypt, Syria, Kabul, and Rome. It has always been my effort that Muslims affirm true allegiance to this Empire, and forget the blood-laden narrations of Messiah and Mahdi, which are unsubstantiated, and the matters of Jihad which work up the emotions, and upsets the hearts of the fools.

Roohani Khazain vol. 15, p. 155, 156.

I firmly believe that as my disciples will increase, those adhering to the matter of Jihad will decrease proportionally, because accepting me as Messiah and Mahdi itself is a denial of Jihad.

Majmoo-ae-Ishtihaaraat, vol. 3, p. 19

Some foolish and ignorant people ask whether it is permissible to wage Jihad against this government or not. Know that this question indicates extreme stupidity, for what Jihad can be waged against the one for whom it is obligatory to offer gratitude for their benevolence? I affirm that maliciousness towards your benefactor is the way of bastards and adulterers.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 6, p. 380.

Declaring Jihad “haraam” (and that too just to appease the colonial masters!) is a clear denunciation of many verses of the Quran, which renders one a kaafir.

11. Declaring the Entire Ummah Kaafir

Finally, despite these sacrilegious and blasphemous beliefs that cannot be accepted by any Muslim, the Qadianis have the audacity to declare all Muslims kaafir. Mirza Ghulam Ahmed and his followers claim that any person who does not believe in the ‘prophethood’ of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed, even if they practice Islam in every other way, is a kaafir and not a Muslim. This, naturally, consists of the entire Muslim Ummah. The irony is that the very people who demand acceptance into the ummah, deny the existence of that very ummah in the first place. Mirza Qadiani writes:

Allah revealed to me that any individual who receives my message and does not accept it is not a Muslim.

Tazkirah, p. 519, 4th printing

My opponents have been named Christians, Jews and Polytheists.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 18, p. 382

In these revelations, with my reference, it was said again and again that he is the envoy of God, commissioned by God, trustee of God, and sent by God – believe in whatever he says and his adversary is consigned to hellfire.

Roohani Khazain, vol. 11, p. 62

Mirza’s successors followed the same creed. Hence, Mirza Mahmood writes:

It is obligatory upon us to consider non-Ahmadis as non-Muslims.

Anwaar-e-Khilaafat, p. 90

This shows that for the Qadianis, considering all Muslims to be outside the fold of Islam is a matter of core faith. To not consider Muslims as kaafir renders one kaafir himself, according to Qadiani creed!

Mirza Mahmood further writes:

All Muslims who did not pledge allegiance to Mirza Qadiyani, even if they may have never heard his name, are kaafir and outside the fold of Islam.

Aainah-e-Sadaqat, p. 35

Mirza’s other son, Mirza Bashir Ahmad, clarifies this further:

Anyone who believes in Musa AS but does not believe in Isa AS, or one who believes in Isa AS but not in Prophet Muhammad SAW, or one who believes in Prophet Muhammad SAW but not in the Promised Messiah (Mirza Ghulam Ahmad) is not only a kaafir, but a staunch kaafir and outside the fold of Islam.

Kalimat ul Fasl, p. 105

Today, the Qadiyanis are complaining about being declared non-Muslims, arguing that no one has the right to decide about anyone’s faith. Yet, since over a hundred years ago, their own religious leadership has been consistently calling all Muslims kaafir, just for not believing Mirza to be a prophet of God.

These points combined paint a clear picture of the fundamental reasons why Qadianis are not Muslims, and why their complaints of discrimination cannot be sympathized with. Their beliefs, as referenced here from their own writings, are clearly contradictory to Islam. It is not a matter of freedom of religion – indeed they can make their own religion if they wish to – but to insist that their clearly deviant beliefs are Islam and to misguide people about core Islamic creed is unacceptable to Muslims.

What is astonishing is that the Qadianis have “stolen” and reappropriated everything from Islam, including the kalima, the personality of the Prophet ﷺ, the verses of the Quran, the terminology and the symbolism, then created a new religion from it, and are now declaring the original followers of that religion as kaafir and themselves as Muslim!

As Muslims, it is our duty to adhere to true Islam as it was explained to us by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. To allow acceptance or respect to the Qadiyanis beliefs would mean to align oneself with the above beliefs that are the height of shirk and blasphemy that no Muslim can believe in.
